Narcissism

My response to the Daily Prompt titled Narcissism.

Narcissism – the point where you have just a little too much confidence and become insufferable to those around you.

I would say a little narcissism isn’t bad but the whole point of narcissism is it is excessive. The definition on Google says as such:

excessive interest in or admiration of oneself and one’s physical appearance

OK sure you can debate what is excessive but by doing that it sounds like you are a bit defensive about being called a narcissist. It’d just be so much easier if everyone just accepted your awesomeness and appreciated it as much as you do.

This is a weird one for me because while I don’t think I am a narcissist, I think social media has turned everyone into one a little bit and I know I have fallen into that trap.

Every time you share something on social media – a picture of you on holiday, a picture of your dinner, a video of you making or talking about something – you get to see how many people viewed, how many liked it and that feels good. It’s a nice little ego boost.

Even this blog post I am writing right now falls into that trap. I’ll keep an eye on it, partly because I get those little notifications up in the corner, but also because every time I see a post I’ve written gets a like or a comment it makes me happy.

I write what I want. I write what I think is funny and/or interesting. I try not to censor myself or be afraid to voice an opinion that may be unpopular or go against the grain.

But every time I see that little notification that says someone liked the post or left a comment, I smile. It makes me happy. It’s a nice feeling.

It’s the same when I record a video and put it up onto YouTube. Seeing the number of views, likes and comments they get.

It’s easy to see how such things can lead people to becoming narcissists. The positive feedback feels good.

Equally it’s easy to see how it can lead people to feeling depressed. It’s horrible to spend a large amount of time recording a video or writing something and for it to either not get viewed or downvoted. Personally I think the not getting viewed is worse, all that effort and no one sees it?

The sad thing is, I don’t think there’s much you can do to change how it works.
