Christmas countdown: Day 17- Christmas Number 1

The Christmas Number 1 in the UK is a very big deal.

Getting Christmas Number 1 is huge.

I remember the X Factor winner dominated the number 1 for a few years and there was a campaign to get Rage Against the Machine’s, “Killing in the name of” to Christmas Number 1 and it was successful. People care and you could tell it annoyed Simon Cowell. Big deal.

Other Christmas Number 1’s include;

Mad World- Gary Jules

Can we fix it?- Bob the Builder

Merry Christmas Everyone- Shakin’ Stevens

Earth Song- Michael Jackson

Impressively both the Beatles and the Spice Girls had three consecutive Christmas Number 1s.

The Beatles: I want to hold your hand (1963), I feel fine (1964) and Day Tripper/We can work it out (1965).

Spice Girls: 2 Become 1 (1996), Too Much (1997) and Goodbye (1998).

The Beatles are also the only artist to have had four Christmas Number 1s. There other number 1 was in 1967 with Hello, Goodbye.

I always check to see who got Christmas Number 1, last year it was the NHS choir who got it.

The X Factor winner (Matt Terry) is the bookies favourite- and well it wouldn’t be surprising.

Mad World is probably one of my favourite Christmas Number 1s. Do you have one?
