This week’s facts are all about the city of London. The greatest city on Earth.
1. Fancy a drink
London has 4,500 pubs and bars.
All of which means you have no excuse for not having a drink. Unless you are underage. Or pregnant. Or boring.
2. Something to read?
London has 900 bookshops.
900 bookshops and I still struggle to find a book to read.
3. Facilities at the Houses of Parliament
The Houses of Parliament has 1,000 rooms, 100 staircases, 11 courtyards, eight bars and six restaurants – none of which are open to the public.
Bastards. Oh and they can smoke in those bars, unlike bars in the rest of the country where there is a smoking ban.
4. Parliament by the Thames
The Palace of Westminster was sited by the river so it could not be totally surrounded by a mob.
Well you can’t say that’s not clever thinking. Someone clearly knew how unpopular politicians were going to be in the future.
5. Olympic legacy
London is the first (and so far only) city to host the Olympics three times (1908, 1948 and 2012).
Yay! Go London.
6. Oldest Zoo
London zoo is the world’s oldest public zoo opening in 1828.
It’s undergone a lot of changes in that time to better care for the animals. For instance no elephants live in the elephant house anymore because it’s no really big enough for them. Of course it’s not really a elephant house but ignore that.
7. Oldest continuously working Film Studio
Ealing Studios are the oldest continuously working film studios in the world having been established in 1902.
Over the years Ealing studios has made many great films and TV shows.
8. One million strong
London reached a population of one million in 1811.
London reached a population of over 1 million over 200 years and has continued to grow bigger. No wonder London always feels so crowded.
9. Great Fire
Only six people died in the Great Fire of London 1666.
Yes a fire so big it’s called the Great Fire and is still remembered to this day because it destroyed most of London only actually killed six people.
